IT Project manager/ director

The IT project manager or the “Chief Information Officer”, checks the execution of a project (organized by an information system, a realization of software … etc.)

Tasks

The IT project manager or the “Chief Information Officer”, checks the execution of a project (organized by an information system, a realization of software … etc.). For that purpose, he assists the project manager by advising it on the way to make best use of the human and technical necessary resources for the good progress of the project.

As technical director, he is responsible for the weekly follow-up and of the activity of the project managers and to participate in decisions. He is in charge of the realization of the various stages of the project and to manage the different providers.
 
During the diverse stages of the project, he has to be aware of the potential problems and find the way to face and solve them, i.e. postpone the production, or the bad organization. He debriefs the evolution of the project to the agency director.

Working conditions

He deals everyday with various actors (software engineers, system engineers, customers, suppliers...); he is the link in the project between his teams and the customers. He manages both the external and the internal resources.

The implementation of a project takes time. Thus he has a full timetable, which means an important volume of work. He also has to well balance deadlines and budget.

Required qualities

The qualities needed are based on: a technological know-how/ knowledge. The knowledge of development, of standards and of the information system architecture of the company are necessary for the project management .

His knowledge of the company and capacities of management (faculty to listen to each member of his team: technicians computing, software engineer) enable him to lead at best his project. He needs to have a good sense of organization and rigor. The diplomacy with the members of the project (suppliers, customers) is a skill also considered for the position.

Training

The training to become an IT project director is generally the result of an engineering school: three years of school and two years of preparatory course. He also needs 7 years of experience and some succeeded development projects or lead development before becoming an IT project director.

Evolution

The IT project director can join services companies computing or software publishers. He can also join every type of company who have an information system.
