The data scientist is an expert in the control and the interpretation of the data.

The data scientist is an expert in the control and the interpretation of the data.
 
The data scientist needs to be versatile. On the contrary to the data analyst, the data scientist examine not only the data of a single source (ex: CRM) but the data of numerous sources. He has to extract the main data and define the concrete indicators. He analyzes both internal as external data (customers, prospects, employees) that the company gets by various ways.
 
Then, he makes recommendations to improve the product or the service of the company, or its performance. The missions of data scientist are various. He has to begin with a "business" issue of the company and to translate it under a statistical shape. He has then to find the sources of data to answer the problem. 
Finally the last mission of the data scientist consists of the analysis of data and the emission of strategic recommendations on the database (modify, repatriate, to outsource or to internalize).

Required qualities

The data scientist is not simply a statistician but also a technician because he has to use the computing tools provided for him to improve the performance and the profitability of the company. 

He has to master three essential skills:
  • a strong attractiveness for technologies and software tools of databases
  • the control of managing data mining and statistics
  • a knowledge in the sector of application of the analyzed data: math, statistics, modelization, analysis of data, but also in computing.
His/her control of information technologies such as Hadoop, Java, MapReduce, Bigtable or NoSQL is necessary to be the most successful possible.

Training

Still a few years ago, there was no specific training for the Data scientist position, but from now more and more French schools propose this training.
 
Several options are possible to become a data scientist. The big majority of schools below propose trainings from Bac+5, even + 6 for some.
The aspirants can join a school specialized in statistics as: Ensae, ParisTech(Paris Institute of Technology), Ensai, Isup, Polytech' Lille.
They can also opt for an engineering school such as: central, polytechnic, Telecom Paristech, Cnam

It is possible to join a big data training from Bac+6 in Grenoble (Ensimag + EMSI)

Finally, it is possible to pursue a program in a business school with the pulpit ESSEC/Accenture in Strategic Business Analytics or the training of 40 hours proposed by HEC to his students in CASH FLOW, in partnership with IBM.

Evolution

The world of Big data is evolving constantly, a multiple opportunities exists for data scientists. Footbridges are made mainly from agency to agency or in joining one more large company from a small structure as a start-up.
